The Nigerian Government has reiterated its dedication to bolstering internal security and deepening grassroots policing with the commissioning of a cutting-edge smart police station in Katampe, Abuja.
The ultra-modern facility, constructed by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, was formally handed over to the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday. It is intended to enhance operational effectiveness and build stronger, trust-based relationships between law enforcement and local communities in the Federal Capital Territory.
More smart police stations are set to be launched in Kogi, Enugu, and other regions in the near future, as part of a broader national rollout.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Anuma Nla, described the initiative as a critical step in advancing security at the community level.
“It embodies our collective resolve to entrench law and order, improve community-police relations, and ensure that every citizen can live without fear,” Nla said. “It stands as a beacon of hope, a pledge of protection, and a commitment to service delivery at the grassroots.”
He called on officers assigned to the new station to uphold the highest standards of conduct, urging professionalism, respect for human rights, and transparent policing practices. Nla also reaffirmed the administration’s goal of strengthening police capabilities in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This police station is a clear demonstration of our resolve to ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria,” he added.
Emphasising the importance of technology in modern policing, Nla appealed to the Inspector General of Police to deploy officers trained in digital tools to the new facility, ensuring it is used to its full potential.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, in his remarks, characterised the new station as a forward-looking infrastructure designed to serve both security personnel and the public.
“This is not just another police station,” Sheidu stated.
“It is a secure, efficient, and community-oriented policing hub built to meet the evolving standards of law enforcement in today’s Nigeria.”
He highlighted the station’s advanced features, including a perimeter fence, closed-circuit surveillance system, overhead water tanks for uninterrupted supply, and a 30-kilowatt off-grid solar energy system developed in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency.
Sheidu also announced the commencement of a new six-unit residential project for junior officers, aimed at improving their living conditions and morale.
“No officer should have to face the burden of duty while contending with inadequate living conditions,” he said.
“This is a tangible step towards boosting morale and ensuring our personnel, especially at the front lines, have the stability to perform their roles with excellence.”
He concluded by underscoring the need for accountability in the use of public funds and urged police personnel to preserve the facility with professionalism and a sense of responsibility.
