While the internet has many thoughts about the Blue Origin ‘mission,’ I did find a bright side to the whole thing. When Gayle King mentioned Katy Perry was singing up in space, I hoped she was belting her space-themed electro hit “E.T.” Unfortunately she did not (she sang a rendition of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong instead), but what’s even more surprising is the extraterrestrial-inspired hit wasn’t even surging the charts either. But there was one song that got a slight boost and it’s not what I expected.
On April 15, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)” peaked to No. #145 on the Global Spotify chart with over 1.2 million total streams. While it has since dropped to #178, it’s impressive to see her 2011 song still making its rounds 14 years later.
I still remember hearing this song back in high school and it continues to be a bop. It was her fifth single from her highly successful third studio album, Teenage Dream. According to Perry, the song was inspired by a night of partying, and er, streaking. Maybe Perry heading to space sparked some nostalgia for some people?
The music video was just as amazing, featuring celebs like Darren Criss, Hanson and Rebecca Black. It was inspired heavily by the classic rom-com Sixteen Candles and other ’80s high school movies.
And let’s not forget how iconic the song was in the 2010s. It made history as the former American Idol judge was the first female solo artist to have five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100—all from this one album. And now after going into space, Perry can add another history-making moment to her list.
It was announced in February that the singer would be joining five other women to space. The crew included CBS Morning host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, Blue Origin founder Lauren Sánchez, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen and NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe. The women spent close to ll minutes on the round trip adventure.
“This experience is second to being a mom,” she shared. “That’s why it was hard for me to go because that’s all my love right there, and I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me and protect me and also my family and daughter. i am full up from being able tog et that gift of being a mom, and to go to space is incredible, and I wanted to model courage, worthiness and fearlessness.”
I may have mixed feelings about Perry’s trip into space, but man can we all give it up for “Last Friday Night”? I’ll be bumping this song all day (even if it’s technically Sunday).
