Authority of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration, (FCTA), through the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), has ordered the demolition of 24 two-storey buildings illegally built on a waterway, in Guzape District, Abuja.
The Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Chief Felix Obuah, gave the order during a tour of parts of Abuja city with other officials of the council.
Chief Obuah said that the 24 buildings were illegally developed on Plot 4851 in Guzape, by a developer, Cityscape Estate, without approval.
He explained that the demolition of the structures would serve as a lesson to other developers who take laws into their hands.
According to him, “We have mobilised equipment, materials and machines. They are right here. Most of all those buildings that are illegally erected without approval will go down.
“Any other building that does not have approval, built on a waterway, or built on a road corridor would be demolished.
“Is no longer business as usual. We will make sure that we bring Abuja back to its standard status.
Obuah said that the AMMC officers found complicit in erecting the illegal structures would also be shown the way out”.
The Coordinator, who supervised the demolition of one of the structures, insisted that the council would no longer take chances with any officer who did not want to do his work.
“They are being paid their salaries; they have been taken care of, so we see no reason why the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is doing everything and having sleepless nights to change the narrative, while some disgruntled elements are busy sabotaging the efforts”, he said.
Obuah however said that based on the developer’s request, the council has given him two weeks to remove all the contraventions, adding that failure to comply with all the structures would be pulled down.
Also speaking, the Director of Development Control, TPL Mukhtar Galadima, explained that the development was initially allocated a plot close to the Federal Housing Authority Estate in the area.
Galadima added that the proposed S20 road affected part of the plot and the developer was given the additional land as compensation.
“However, that does not mean that the developer can just go and build without approval,” he said.
The director said that the infraction was discovered about two weeks ago during a routine inspection of projects across the city.
He added that he set up a committee to investigate, because there is no way a development could be approved in a valley.
“The preliminary findings revealed that the structures on ground were more than what was approved.
“This is a total violation of the approval granted,” Galadima said.
On his part, Chairman, FCT Building Contravention Taskforce, Mr Gabriel Musa explained that the developer built 42 buildings as against the 18 originally approved by the FCT Administration.
Earlier, the developer, Mr Kadiri Obaidi acknowledged the infractions but blamed it on the subscribers.
“We have approval for the entire estate, but there have been many infractions here, mostly from our subscribers whom we are responsible for.
“So, we won’t deny any wrongdoing. We take responsibility,” he said.
He then appealed to the council to give him two weeks to pull down all the illegal structures at no cost to the council to enable him salvage some of the materials, which was granted.
