A new chapter for Nigerian sports began on Saturday as Abuja hosted the inaugural Sports Meet Nigeria Conference, at the prestigious Grand Cubana Hotel in Jabi.
This high-impact professional gathering drew together a diverse array of stakeholders in the Nigerian sports industry. The conference is designed to foster collaboration and networking among sports business professionals, investors, administrators, marketers, broadcasters, media and PR experts.
By bringing together this diverse range of expertise, the Sports Meet Nigeria Conference aims to create a more collaborative, innovative and ultimately successful sports ecosystem in the country. The theme of the event is, Shaping the Future of Sports; Collaboration, Innovation and Impact.
The conference is organised by veteran sports business advisor, FIFA Player’s and Match Agent, Boxing Promoter and Matchmaker, Akeola Lukumanu Ayinde. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of ESEM-GROUP.
“The Sports Meet Nigeria platform is dedicated to celebrating sports, fostering talent and building meaningful collaborations,” Ayinde said. “I am honoured to introduce the Elite Sports Development Foundation, a platform designed to nurture and support young athletes, provide mentorship and create sustainable opportunities in sports.”
“I believe that sports its not just about competition, but about discipline, character and national pride. Through this foundation, we aim to lay the ground work for future champions, ensuring that talent is discovered, nurtured and celebrated. Today also marks the official launching of my book, Beyond the Games.”

“A work that delves into the deeper impact of sports beyond the playing field. This book is a reflection of my experience, lessons and visions for the future of sports in Africa. I hope it serves an an inspiration and a guide for athletes, coaches and anyone passionate about the power of sports,” he added.
“This event is more than just a gathering, its a call to action. It is an opportunity for us to connect, collaborate and shape the future of sports in Nigeria. I invite each of you to engage fully, share ideas and be part of this new chapter.”
The Sports Meet Nigeria Conference is not just an event; it’s a significant step towards building a more collaborative, innovative and ultimately successful sports industry in Nigeria.
With such a broad spectrum of participants, the discussions were rich and insightful, helped shape the future of sports development in Nigeria.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, was represented by his Senior Special Advisor, Salihu Abubakar and he shared a few words about the role of Commission in treating sports as a business.
“This event is very important because of the focus of the new National Sports Commission,” he said. “We are all aware that the Federal Government scrapped the Ministry of Sorts for so many reasons and reintroduced the National Sports Commission.”
“Today’s event dovetails into that thinking because the clear mandate of the President is; ‘go and change sports, reset sports, refocus sports and relaunch it into a business’. And we are talking sports business here today. so we feel this event is very close to the hearts of the National Sports Commission.”
“I am particularly impressed with the convener’s enthusiasm . I engaged him in my office and he showed me the book he wrote. I flipped through and saw many interesting topics that will assist Nigerian sports in moving forward. I will recommend the book to every sports organisation,” he added.
The presence of leading figures from across the Nigerian sports ecosystem underscores the importance of this inaugural conference. It serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders to connect, share expertise and collectively chart a course for a more professionalized and thriving sports industry in the nation.
The conference, long-anticipated by many in the sector, was a day of insightful discussions and strategic networking with the forging of partnerships that could shape the future of Nigerian sports.
Attendees engaged in a series of keynote speeches, panel discussions and interactive sessions designed to address critical issues and unlock the vast potential within Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

The book, Beyond the Game- Unveiling The Potential of Sports in Nigeria, was launched at the event and Halima Imam, highlighted some of the aspects of the book.
“The book creates awareness about legal protection and responsibilities for athletes. Someone who has talent needs to be protected by law,” she said. “The book also focuses on the future of sports in Nigeria. It offers visionary insight on what must be done to unlock Nigeria’s full sports potential.”
“If Nigeria truly taps into the power of sports, it can open up a massive economic, social and diplomatic opportunities. Beyond the Game is not just a book, it is blueprint for anyone interested in the advancement of sports in and across Africa.”
Present at the event were; Assistant Director (Sports Tourism) of the Nigeria Tourism and Developmental Commission, Tunde Adeleke; CEO of Winning Stars Sports Academy, Modupeola Abigel; Founder of  CEO Foundation, Dr.Grace Obar, amongst others.
